My essay:
Hosting major sporting events has long been a subject of debate. While some believe these events offer substantial benefits, others argue that they are a waste of money. Personally, I agree with the latter view.
On the one hand, hosting major sporting events such as the Olympic Games or the FIFA World Cup can yield considerable advantages. Firstly, it enhances a nation’s global visibility, showcasing its culture, infrastructure, and organizational capabilities to an international audience. This can boost tourism and foreign investment, contributing to long-term economic growth. In addition, such events can strengthen national pride, solidarity, and unity, as citizens rally together and unite to support their country, fostering a collective sense of achievement and belonging.
On the other hand, there are also significant drawbacks. First and foremost, building and maintaining state-of-the-art stadiums and sporting facilities requires an excessive amount of money, yet many of these structures tend to fall into disuse and disrepair after such temporary events. Consequently, these structures, which lack long-term practicability, become symbols of wasteful investment rather than national pride. Furthermore, many nations, particularly developing countries, have more urgent problems, such as poverty, crime, and illiteracy that directly affect people’s quality of life and well-being. Therefore, I firmly believe that instead of spending excessive amounts on extravagant sporting events, governments in these countries should focus on solving these problems to improve the lives of their residents.
In conclusion, while hosting major sporting events can bring short-term benefits, in my view, the problems they result in outweigh these. Governments, especially in less affluent nations, should prioritize addressing pressing domestic problems over funding extravagant events.
