Task 2: Today many countries import food from different parts of the world. Is this a positive or negative development?
My essay:
In recent years, there has been an increase in imports particularly food. In my opinion, this trend causes a few problems but also has a positive effect.
On the one hand, importing food from other countries leads to some drawbacks. First, it requires extra packaging and transporting, which have a damaging impact on the environment. In addition, some may depend heavily on imports, and therefore, ignore the possibility of developing a self-sufficient economy. When a nation imports more than it exports, this may distort the balance of trade and devalue its currency. Obviously, the problems of this trend are noticeable.
Nevertheless, there are significant benefits. First, the popularity of imported food provides consumers with a wide range of food products all year round. In other words, it guarantees an adequate intake of nutrition for people throughout the year since the supply of products is less likely to be influenced by seasonal factors. Another benefit is economic development. In fact, some places are famous for agricultural products while others specialize in electronic ones. Thus, a country can import food from other regions and also exports its well-known goods to the world, so it can facilitate the exchange of goods, services, and capital with the rest of the world and promote economic growth. For instance, Vietnam sells rice to many different countries and also imports such electronic products as smartphones. Undoubtedly, the availability of imported food has great advantages.
In conclusion, although the country which relies too much on imports has to face some problems, I believe this trend is a positive development.
