Task 2: Some countries allow old people to work to any age that they want. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
MY ESSAY:
People nowadays live longer and more healthily due to improved diet, higher incomes, and medical advances. Therefore, some countries allow the old to work to any age they want. This policy has both problems and benefits.
There are several disadvantages of abolishing mandatory retirement. First, it is believed that old employees might impede promoting young staff as with more working experience and professional skills, the old tend to hold most high-powered jobs in a company. In addition, this type of policy may also have a negative impact on some old people’s health and their personal relationships (with families particularly). For instance, old workaholics may probably prefer to work forever, they cannot balance work and family life and spend little time for themselves and their family members. As a result, their health and family bonds would suffer.
Nevertheless, the advantages of making retirement voluntary are significant. First and foremost, this policy brings an improvement in the overall well-being of the elderly. Retired people are more prone to the feeling of loneliness especially when their grown-up children do not live with them. Hence, being able to extend their working lives helps keep them from feeling isolated and solitary. Although old employees tend to hold important job positions with higher salaries, they deserve these rewards because, with a wealth of experience and specialized knowledge, they ensure the consistency of staff training of an organization. Furthermore, unlike young people who are often bound by family obligations such as taking care of their own families and children, the old are released for productive work, which benefits the company they are working for. Clearly, there are tangible benefits when retirement becomes a voluntary option.
In conclusion, although the policy of allowing old people to work to the age that they want has some disadvantages, in my opinion, the benefits it brings outweigh those problems.
